Notes:
1.  Each visitor must present a current, valid photo ID to enter Arsenal Island. Non-US Citizens will need to fill out and submit an application prior to the banquet.
2.  To get to Arsenal Island, you must either use the government bridge from Davenport (After 5:30 PM) or enter from Rock Island. The Moline bridge is scheduled to be closed for construction.
3.  Free parking is available across from the Arsenal Club to the West and North.

Congressman Phil Hare

Speaking On: 
"STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Education – How Congress is Addressing these Issues and How they affect the Quad Cities"

Congressman Phil Hare is serving his second term in Congress replacing Lane Evans. Cong. Hare is a member of the STEM Education Caucus and a member of the House Education and Labor Committee. Previously, he served for 24 years as former Cong. Evans District Director.

Cong. Hare was born in Galesburg, Illinois. He graduated from Alleman High School in Rock Island, IL and attended Blackhawk College in Moline, IL. He served six years in the U.S. Army Reserves and currently serves on the Education and Labor and Transportation and Infrastructure Committees.

Dr. Jeffrey Weld,
Director of the Iowa Mathematics & Science Education Partnership 

Speaking On: 
"Overview on STEM Education Efforts Across Iowa"

Jeffrey Weld, PhD, is the Director of the Iowa Mathematics & Science Education Partnership and Associate Professor of Biology at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Jeff earned a doctorate in Science Education with an emphasis in ecology and endocrinology at the University of Iowa in 1998 after teaching high school biology and chemistry for eleven years.  Ciba-Geigy named Jeff a 1993 Life Science Teacher of the year for Iowa, Pella Corporation honored Jeff with the Focus on Teaching Excellence award in 1994, and in 1995 Genentech awarded Jeff one of fifty "Access Excellence Fellowships" from across the U.S.A.  As a university faculty member, first at Oklahoma State University from 1998 to 2000 and then at UNI from 2000 to 2008, Jeff has conducted research around barriers to the adoption of innovative science teaching approaches at the high school and collegiate level, and how to overcome them. Jeff has authored more than fifty research articles, essays, and book chapters, along with the textbook The Game of Science Education published in 2004. He is past President of the Iowa Science Teachers and of UNI’s chapter of Sigma Xi — the scientific research society. In 2007, Jeff was recognized as the Four-Year College Biology Teacher of the Year by the National Association of Biology Teachers. He has directed the Iowa Math and Science Education Partnership since July 1, 2008.

History of Arsenal Island ~ Kris Leinicke, Arsenal Museum Director

Kris Leinicke is the Director of the Rock Island Arsenal Museum, and has been employed at the museum for the past 26 years. At the request of the U.S. Army Center of Military History, Fort McNair, District of Columbia, she has served as a U.S. Army museum certification inspector, as a member of the initial museum planning committee for the National Museum of the U.S. Army, and as the Deputy Chief Curator for Army Material Command (AMC) Museums.

 

  *  Engineering and Science Accomplishments at Joint Manufacturing & Technology Center (JMTC) ~ Edward Flinn, Director of Science and Engineering

Edward started at the Rock Island Arsenal, Rock Island, IL in 1985 as a chemical engineer in the Material Science department of the Science and Engineering Directorate supporting the foundry and plating shops. In 1990, he left the Arsenal and took a position as the Production Supervisor and Plant Engineer for Olin Specialty Chemicals in Seward, IL. In 1997 he became the Senior Engineering/Product Manager for El Dorado Chemical Company in Wilmington, NC and St. Louis, MO. He returned to Rock Island Arsenal in 2005 as the Supervisor of Material Science in the Science and Engineering Directorate. He presently is the Director of Science and Engineering which directly supports manufacturing with preproduction processes and engineering expertise.

Edward has a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Bradley University (1980), a Masters of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering (1983) from The Ohio State University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (2000).

Edward is married to Claire and they have two children, Madison 11, and Connor 8.

   
Menu: Buffet with: entrées of Chef Carved Roast Beef Au Jus, Chicken Marsala, and Lemon Pepper Cod. Tossed Salad, Baby Mixed Greens, Potato Salad, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Wild Rice Blend, Green Beans Almondine, and Key West Vegetable Blend. Dessert is included with Coffee or Ice Tea.
 
Cost: $35 per person (includes Hors d’oeuvres, and desert)
