SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED AT ENGINEERS WEEK BANQUET

Rock Island, Illinois - At its 48th Annual National Engineers Week Banquet held on February 19th, the Quad City Engineering and Science Council (QCESC) awarded six scholarships totaling
$8,000.  The Quad City Engineering and Science Council (QCESC) is an umbrella organization representing 35 technical societies in the Quad City area with approximately 5,000 associated members.

QCESC $2,000 Scholarship

Michelle Brus - Davenport West High School

Michelle Brus is a senior at Davenport West High School, ranked 1 in her class of 430 with a 4.00 GPA and 31 ACT score.

Throughout high school, Michelle has taken five Project Lead the Way courses. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Drama Tech Crew, Marching and Concert Bands and a co-captain of the electric car team. This fall, Michelle will attend Iowa State University to major in Agricultural Engineering. She would like to develop and implement methods to improve the food and water systems in developing countries. Michelle is the daughter of Tom and Sandra Brus of Davenport.

 

 

QCESC $2,000 Scholarship

Matthew MacLennan – Alleman High School

Matthew MacLennan is a senior at Alleman High School,  ranked 5th in his class with an GPA Of 4.53 and a ACT score of 34.

In addition to mathematics, Matt enjoys tennis, playing percussion in musical groups, and computer gaming. He also focuses much of his free time on community service, both through his school and church. Matt intends to focus on an engineering degree in computer science in college. He has been accepted at the University of Notre Dame, Purdue, and Illinois, yet also awaits to hear from M.I.T. and Carnegie Mellon in the spring. He would like to be involved in creating software which enhances the lives of those with disabilities. Matt is the son of Mike and Katie MacLennan of East Moline.

 

 

 

University of Iowa Engineering College $1,000 Scholarship

Kevin Johnson – Rock Island High School

Kevin Johnson is a senior at Rock Island High School, ranked 1st in his class of 290 with a GPA of 4.00 and a ACT of 31.

He is an Illinois State Scholar and received the Illinois Quad City Chamber of Commerce Academic Achievement Award. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Marching and Symphonic Bands and currently is the President of the Key Club. He volunteers at Trinity Hospital in Rock Island. He will be entering the Biomedical Engineering program at The University of Iowa.   He would like to research and develop medical devices that will improve cardiovascular healthcare. Kevin is the son of Kevin and Rhonda Johnson of Rock Island.

 

 

University of Iowa Engineering College $1,000 Scholarship

Allison Vandecar – Davenport Central High School

Allison Vandercar is a senior at Davenport Central High School, ranked 1st in his class of 313 with a GPA of 4.00 and a ACT of 31.

For four years, Allison has participated in marching band and has been drum major for the last two years. For the past three years, she has been selected to the Iowa All-State Honor Band. She also has played piano for ten years winning numerous competitions. She also is an active community and church volunteer. She will be attending The University of Iowa to study Industrial Engineering. She hopes to make an “amazing contribution to society” or, at the least, “change a small corner of the world in a positive way”. Allison is the daughter of Kirk and Jo Vandecar of Davenport.

   
 

 

Iowa State College of Engineering $1,000 Scholarship

Danielle Kimler– Davenport Central High School

Danielle Kimler is a senior at Davenport Central High School, ranked 10th in her class of 313 with a GPA of 4.00 and a ACT score of 30.  .

She participates in Central’s concert and marching bands, the school newspaper and Key Club. This year she was selected to play in the Iowa All-State Orchestra on the French horn. Danielle is active in her church choir, bell choir, Praise Team Band, and newcomer ministry. During the holiday season, she volunteers for the Salvation Army as a bell ringer.  She plans to attend Iowa State to major in electrical or computer engineering and would like to work for a software company.  Danielle is the daughter of Dave Kimler and Barb Lester of Davenport.

 

 

 

Iowa State College of Engineering $1,000 Scholarship

Chris Harre – Davenport Central High School

Chris Harre is a senior at Davenport Central High School, ranked 22nc in his class of 313 with a GPA of 3.92 and a ACT score of 29.

He has twice received academic excellence honors.  He is a National Honor Society member and Vice-President of his 4-H Club.  He has run cross county and played soccer receiving all conference academic honors in both sports.  He is also active in the Central High School Environmental Club.  Chris will be attending Iowa State University to major in Civil Engineering next year.  He would like to become a structural engineer specializing in designing either bridges or sports stadiums.  Chris is the son of Ray and Barb Harre of Davenport.
