SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED AT ENGINEERS WEEK BANQUET
Davenport, Iowa - The Quad City Engineering and Science Council presented the following scholarships at the 47th Annual National Engineers Week Banquet held on Friday, February 20, 2009 at the Radisson Quad City Plaza Hotel in Davenport in conjunction with the Henry Farnam Dinner. The QCESC is a non-profit umbrella organization representing 32 technical societies in the Quad City region with approximately 5,000 associated members.

QCESC $2,500 Scholarship Austin Laugen - Davenport Central High School Austin Laugen is a senior at Davenport Central High School, ranking 1 in his class of 294 with a 4.00 GPA and 33 ACT score. He is a National Merit Finalist. Austin is the son of Marilyn and Randy Laugen of Davenport. Through his time in high school, Austin has taken part in many activities. He serves as a student representative on both the Project Lead The Way Advisory Council and the Davenport Community School Board. He is a senior class officer, vice president of Key Club, and Captain of his Mock Trial Team He devotes a large amount of his time to volunteering, working at Habitat for Humanity and tutoring students in his school among other activities. He has a wide range of hobbies, from repairing computers to snow and water skiing. Austin plans to major in Computer Engineering at Iowa State University next year. |

$1,000 Scholarship Wade Lang – Pleasant Valley High School Wade Lang is a senior at Pleasant Valley High School, with an GPA Of 4.4 and a ACT score of 31. He is the son of Curt and Pam Lang of LeClaire. In high school Wade participated in football and track. He was awarded all-conference and academic all-conference honors in both sports. In addition to sports he is a member of National Honors Society and was his school's representative to Iowa Hawkeye Boys State. Outside of school Wade is a member of Young Life and Campaigners Bible Study. He has participated in two mission trips, including one to Ethiopia last summer. Wade has volunteered at APRIS, a radio station for the visually impaired.. He plans to attend Iowa State University to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering with a minor in Spanish. |

$1,000 Scholarship Andrew Slifka – Bettendorf High School Andrew Slifka is a senior at Bettendorf High School with ACT score of 33. . He was named a national merit finalist this year. He is the son of Mark and Deb Slifka of Bettendorf. Andrew was on the football and swim teams, where he was a multi-year letter winner as well as a state champion in both sports. He was also a member of the National Honors Society. Twice weekly, he tutors students in Mathematics. Outside of school, Andrew enjoys reading and sports including golf, hockey, skiing, and fishing. He works part-time for a landscaping company. Andrew plans to attend Iowa State University next year and major in Mechanical Engineering. |
