SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED AT ENGINEERS WEEK BANQUET

Davenport, IA -- The Quad City Engineering and Science Council presented the following scholarships at the 40th Annual National Engineers Week Banquet held on Friday, February 23, 2002 at the Holiday Inn in Davenport, Iowa.

Joel Boerckel, United Township High School, East Moline, IL

United Township High School Senior Joel Boerckel, son of R. Scott and Carol Boerckel, was selected for a scholarship by the Quad City Engineering and Science Council. Joel is ranked 1st in his High School Class at United Township and has provided leadership in several extra curricular activities. Joel will attend either Grove City College or Letourneau University where he plans to major in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering. He hopes to eventually use his degree to solve infrastructure, water supply, pollution, and food shortage problems in impoverished countries such as Bolivia.    

 

Julie Riewerts, Riverdale High School, Port Byron, IL

Riverdale High School Senior, Julie Riewerts, daughter of Martin and Sylvia Riewerts, was awarded a scholarship by the Quad City Engineering and Science Council. Julie is ranked number two in her class at Riverdale High School. Julie is also involved in over 20 different extracurricular activities and was selected as a National Heisman Finalist and the overall Heisman winner for the State of Illinois. Julie plans to attend college at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or Benedictine University to study Biology and eventually obtain a medical degree. Julie's career goal is to practice Medicine.   

 

Nathan Vandike, J.D. Darnall High School, Geneseo, IL

J.D. Darnall High School Senior Nathan Vandike, son of Steve and Vicky Vandike, has been awarded a scholarship by the Quad City Engineering and Science Council. Nathan is ranked at the top of his class at J.D. Darnall High School and has also taken leadership roles in several activities at his high school and in the community. Nathan plans on pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or Bradley University. He then hopes to become involved in research and development of agricultural related technology.   

 

Major funding for the QCESC scholarships was provided by the International Society for Measurement and Control (ISA). Other contributing societies for the QCESC scholarships this year include American Chemical Society, American Society of Safety Engineers, Association for Facilities Engineering, American Foundry Society, American Industrial Hygiene Association, American Nuclear Society, American Production and Inventory Control Society, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers , American Society for Quality, Fluid Power Society, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Institute of Industrial Engineers, Society of American Military Engineers, SAVE International, The Science Research Society, and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
