SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED AT ENGINEERS WEEK BANQUET

Bettendorf, IA -- The Quad City Engineering and Science Council presented the following scholarships at the 38th Annual National Engineers Week Banquet held on Friday, February 27, 2000 at Jumer’s Castle Lodge in Bettendorf.

killian_col.jpg (7167 bytes) David Killian, Davenport Assumption High School, Davenport, IA - ISA Scholarship

Davenport Assumption High School Senior David Killian was awarded the Instrument Society of America Scholarship by the Quad City Engineering and Science Council. David is ranked 2nd in his High School Class at Davenport Assumption. David provides leadership in several extra curricular activities, some of which include the Davenport Radio Control Society, the National Honor Society, Ice Hockey, Roller Hockey, and the Science Club. David also is employed by a computer-consulting firm where he works in Web Page Design and computer animation. David plans to attend either the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or Carnegie Mellon University where he plans to major in computer science and eventually be involved in the development of new computer technologies.

Bettendorf High School Senior, Chet Vignes was awarded a scholarship by the Quad City Engineering and Science Council. Chet is ranked number one in his class at Bettendorf High School. Chet is also involved in the National Honor Society, Key Club International, Food Basket Delivery Programs, and has also volunteered at the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center and numerous other community events. Chet plans to attend college at the University of Pennsylvania to earn a dual degree in engineering and actuarial science. One of Chet's career goals is to combine his proficiency in the German language with a dual academic degree to work for an engineering firm in an international capacity.

Erin Sparks has been awarded a scholarship by the Quad City Engineering and Science Council. Erin is ranked at the top of her class at United Township High School. She has also taken leadership roles in several activities including the Key Club, National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Interact Club, Letterman's Club, Key Newspaper Staff, the Math Team, Cross Country Team, and the Track Team. She also coaches gymnastics and volunteers for the YMCA and the Salvation Army. Erin plans on attending either Northwestern University in Evanston, IL or Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. She plans on pursuing a degree in biomedical engineering eventually getting a Ph.D. She then hopes to become involved in research and development of biomedical technology.         

 

Major funding for the QCESC scholarships was provided by the Instrument Society of America (ISA), the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), and the American Society for Quality (ASQ). Other contributing societies for the QCESC scholarships this year include the American Chemical Society (ACS), Association of Facilities Engineering (AFE), American Foundrymen's Society (AFS), American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), American Nuclear Society (ANS), American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS) , American Society of Engineering in Agricultural, Food, and Biological Systems (ASAE), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) , American Society for Quality (ASQ), Fluid Power Society (FPS), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE), International Society for Measurement and Control (ISA), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), SAVE International, The Science Research Society (Signma Xi), and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME).
