SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED AT ENGINEERS WEEK BANQUET
Davenport, Iowa - At its 49th Annual National Engineers Week Banquet held on February 24th, the Quad City Engineering and Science Council (QCESC) awarded seven scholarships totaling $12,000. The Quad City Engineering and Science Council (QCESC) is an umbrella organization representing 35 technical societies in the Quad City area with approximately 5,000 associated members.

QCESC $2,500 Scholarship Kara Poppe - Davenport West High School Kara Poppe is a senior at Davenport West High School, ranked 1st in her class of 432 with a 4.00 GPA and an ACT score of 30. Kara participated in the Earthwatch Student Challenge Awards Program and has volunteered with many local environmental organizations. Kara is the president of Ecology Club, French Club, and Leo Club, and is an active member of National Honor Society, Leadership, and Environmental Club. This summer, she plans to volunteer in a National Park with the Student Conservation Association. In the fall, Kara will attend the University of Northern Iowa and major in Geography with Environmental Emphasis. She would like to further research community environmental and sustainability issues. Kara is the daughter of Mark and Sharyl Poppe of Davenport. |

QCESC $2,500 Scholarship Daniel Wiegel - Rockridge High School Daniel Wiegel is a senior at Rockridge High School, ranked 1st in his class of 128 with a 32 ACT score and a GPA of 5.55 (on a 5.0 scale). He is an Illinois State Scholar and is Historian of the National Honor Society. He is captain of the Scholastic Bowl team, President of the Spanish Club and captain of the golf team. This fall he will attend Iowa State University majoring in Chemical Engineering. He would like to research and develop new methods for businesses to become more environmentally friendly. He is the son of John and Lisa Wiegel of Illinois City, IL. |

NDIA $2,000 Scholarship Addison Kistler - Rockridge High School Addison Kistler is a senior at Rockridge High School, ranked 1 in his class of 128, with a 5.56 GPA (on a 5.0 scale) and 30 ACT score. He is an Illinois State Scholar and received the Illinois Quad City Chamber of Commerce Academic Achievement Award for the last four years. He was the Milan Junior Rotarian for December, 2010 and has been recognized by the National Achievement Academy for Mathematics. He is Treasurer of the National Honor Society, Vice President of his Senior Class, and a member of Cross Country and Track. He is also a member of Spanish Club, Crime Prevention Unit, and Envirothon. He has been an active member of his youth group and volunteers his time with his Church VBS program and local missions. He works part time at Hy-Vee in Muscatine and Reynolds Feed and Supply. He is interested in entering the Aerospace Engineering program at Iowa State University. Addison is the son of Marty and Jami Kistler of Illinois City. |

Scholarship Karen Dau – Davenport West High School Karen Dau is a senior at Davenport West High School. She is ranked tenth in my class of 432 with a GPA of 3.988 and an ACT score of 29. Outside of school, she is the president of her 4-H club. In school, she is involved in orchestra, ecology club, and National Honors Society. She was also selected to be a Junior Rotarian for the month of January. Karen is planning to attend Iowa State University where she will major in Chemical Engineering with a possible minor in Materials Engineering. After college she would like to establish a career in the medical field by improving the devices used to administer medications and vaccines. She is the daughter of Verle and Susan Dau. |

$1,000 Scholarship Brady Whitney - Maquoketa High School Brady Whitney is a Senior at Maquoketa High School, ranked 6 in his class of 153 with a 3.85 GPA and a 29 ACT score. Never one to take the easy route, Brady has taken multiple college-level courses each of his 4 years of High School including 4 Project Lead the Way courses, Calculus I and II, Composition I and II and more. He is also a member of the High School's Football and Soccer teams, FFA, C.A.G.E. (Cardinal Acting Guild Entourage), Model UN, National Honor Society, as well as a former member of Club Hope. Next fall Brady plans on attending Iowa State University to pursue a career in the Engineering Field, still undecided between becoming a Civil Engineer or a Software Engineer (Game Designer). Brady is the son of Scott and Jean Whitney of Maquoketa. |

Iowa State College of Engineering
$1,000 Scholarship Tim Gipple - Davenport West High School Tim Gipple is a senior at Davenport West High School, ranked 1st in his class of 432 with a 4.0 unweighted GPA and an ACT score of 33. Through his four years of high school, Tim has taken three PLTW (Project Lead the Way) courses, along with 4 AP courses (AP Calculus, AP Chemistry, AP English, AP Spanish). He is the current Treasurer of the West High chapter of National Honor Society. He participated in both Basketball and Baseball at the varsity level for 2 years, and is a captain on the 2011 MAC Championship Team. Tim played in the West Marching Band and Wind Ensemble for 3 years, and was co-captain for the 2010-2011 Drumline. Tim plans on majoring in Engineering at either Marquette University, Iowa State, or Notre Dame. Tim is the son of Tina Gipple and Todd Gipple. |

University of Iowa College of Engineering
$1,000 Scholarship Kathryn Temple - Muscatine High School Kathryn has a GPA of 4.0 and is ranked 1 in a class of 380 at Muscatine High School. She is Vice President of Student Council and National Honor Society, has played soccer for the last 4 years, was a member of FFA making a trip to Nationals her sophomore and junior years. Outside of school she is a member of the SS Mary and Mathias church youth group and has participated in two week long service projects helping the underprivileged in the hills of David, Kentucky. She also teaches in the religious education program. She has taken Calculus 1 and 2 at Muscatine Community College her senior year, and one Project Lead the Way class. She will be attending the University of Iowa majoring in Electrical Engineering and has been accepted into the Honors Program. Kathryn is the daughter of Paul and Kay Temple. She has an older sister Karrie, and two older brothers Mark and Andrew. |
