Ancient Aerodynamics: A Parachute
Workshop
Workshop participates were given an overview on parachutes including by
paratrooper SPC Jeff Hook from the Iowa National Guard then given raw materials
to design and build a parachute. Working individually, the designs were

Battle of the Bridges
Workshop participates were given an overview on bridge design and structures
from Bill Ashton of Ashton Engineering with the objective to build a model
bridge onsite given a box of materials provided at the workshop within a time
limit of 3 hours that is capable of supporting the greatest load per unit of
mass (Efficiency Ratio = max load / model mass)..
Due to the large number of Family teams participating in the contest, the Top 4 teams were awarded a $25 dollar Putnam Museum gift certificate courtesy of American Society of Civil Engineers. High School and Junior High first place winners were awarded IMAX Theatre tickets courtesy of Putnam Museum & IMAX Theatre.

Fling it! Sling It! Wing It! -
Catapult Contest
Teams of up to four people designed and constructed
catapults before the contest with any building material. The design constraints
were: 1) the catapult energy was provided by humans and 2)the catapult must fit
within a 2×2×2 foot box. The contest objective was to hurl a wiffle golf ball at
a target 30 feet away with the best accuracy (average of 5 shots).
