2008 Leonardo Da Vinci  Workshop Results


In partnership with the Putnam Museum in Davenport, Iowa and inspired by one of the great geniuses the world has ever known, Leonardo Da Vinci, four specially designed workshops were held to expose local students and families to innovation, engineering and science.  The workshops were held in conjunction with the Leonardo Da Vinci:  Man | Inventor | Genius Exhibition.

Ancient Aerodynamics:  A Parachute Workshop
Workshop participates were given an overview on parachutes including by paratrooper SPC Jeff Hook from the Iowa National Guard then given raw materials to design and build a parachute.  Working individually, the designs were then tested from the 2nd floor on the Putnam with a contest held to see who could come closest to a target.

Battle of the Bridges
Workshop participates were given an overview on bridge design and structures from Bill Ashton of Ashton Engineering with the objective to build a model bridge onsite given a box of materials provided at the workshop within a time limit of 3 hours that is capable of supporting the greatest load per unit of mass (Efficiency Ratio = max load / model mass)..

Due to the large number of Family teams participating in the contest, the Top 4 teams were awarded a $25 dollar Putnam Museum gift certificate courtesy of American Society of Civil Engineers. High School and Junior High first place winners were awarded IMAX Theatre tickets courtesy of Putnam Museum & IMAX Theatre.

Invention Convention
On Superbowl Sunday, students were invited to display their original inventions in the Grand Lobby of the Putnam Museum.  All participates received a free pass to the Da Vinci Exhibition.

Fling it! Sling It! Wing It! - Catapult Contest
Teams of up to four people designed and constructed catapults before the contest with any building material. The design constraints were: 1) the catapult energy was provided by humans and 2)the catapult must fit within a 2×2×2 foot box. The contest objective was to hurl a wiffle golf ball at a target 30 feet away with the best accuracy (average of 5 shots).
