5th Annual Battle of Bridges Contest

On Friday and Saturday, February 10-11, 2012, the 5th annual Battle of the Bridge Contest will be held at the Putnam Museum in Davenport. with teams of all ages welcome to participate. 

Event Objective:
To build a model bridge onsite given a box of materials provided at the workshop within a time limit of 3 hours that is capable of supporting the greatest load per unit of mass.

Friday, February 10 & Saturday, February 12, 2012:

Who/Category:
The contest is open to any student, grade or age for either Friday or Saturday. The primary reason for the Friday session is to raise high school team participation as this is the first event of three for the QC Tech Challenge. A team may consist of one, two, three or four people. All members of the team must be signed up on the registration form. Teams will be categorized as follows:

• Dare Devils (grades 1-3)
• Elementary (grades 4-6)
• Middle School (grades 7-8)
• High School (grades 9-12)
• College
• Family (any combination - kids, adults, seniors)

Registration Limitations:

• Friday: 30 teams max (any combination) limited to 5 teams from any one High School
• Saturday: 30 teams max (any combination), limited to 5 High School teams only

Cost:
$20.00 per team. The cost includes a bridge kit and access to a complete tool kit provided to you at the workshop along with popcorn & pop. The cost does not include entrance to the museum and/or theatre — not required for event. For teams that need financial assistance to participate, please check the associated box when registering on-line someone will follow-up with you.

Prizes:
Bridges with the highest structural efficiency (E = maximum load! bridge mass) will be awarded prizes in each category. Snacks will be provided to all participants!

High school teams will receive points from the event as part of the three event QC Tech Challenge which also includes Trebuchet Egg Throw Competition on April 13, 2012 and the Cardboard Boat Regatta Competition being held on May 18, 2011.  In addition, an award will be given out to the high school team with the the most innovative bridge design..

Battle of the Bridge History:
In 2008, the Quad City Engineering and Science Council sponsored it's first bridge building contest as part of a series of workshops supporting the Da Vinci Exhibit at the Putnam Museum in Davenport.  Based on the success of the contest, this is now an annual event.
