AWARDS ANNOUNCED AT ENGINEERS WEEK BANQUET

Moline, IL -  The Quad City Engineering and Science Council presented the following awards at the 43rd Annual National Engineers Week Banquet held on Friday, February 25, 2005 at John Deere Pavilion in Moline, Illinois.

Junior Engineer of the Year:

Miles Keaton P.E

Mr. Keaton is employed at the John Deere Seeding Group located in Moline, Illinois as a Product Program Manager. Mr. Keaton is an innovative engineer with worldwide engineering experience including a 14 month assignment at John Deere’s Horizontina, Brasil facility. His Seeding technology improvements have significantly improved planter precision and productivity for John Deere’s customers. Mr. Keaton has been grated 4 patents related to agricultural equipment.

Mr. Keaton has been an active member of the community including in Junior Achievement, Quad City Chamber of Commerce Career Day, an English instructor at the Fisk Language School in Horizontina, Brasil and a volunteer at the Memorial Heights United Methodist Church in Rock Island.

Mr. Keaton is a member and past Section Chair of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE) • Quad City Section and holds a B.S. and M.S. in Agriculture Engineering from Kansas State University and is currently working on his MBA from the University of Chicago. He lives in Port Byron, Illinois with his wife, Cortney, and their two daughters.

 

Senior Engineer of the Year:

Paul D. VanDuyne, P.E.

Mr. VanDuyne has 31 years of engineering experience culminating in this current position as President of KJWW Engineering Consultants, a 225 person firm headquartered in Rock Island, Illinois. While at KJWW, he has held various positions including: Electrical Design Engineer, Project Manager, Department Supervisor, Vice President, Corp. Manager of Electrical Engineering, Director, and facilitated the development and opening of the company's fifth office in St. Louis, Missouri. He is a registered Professional Engineer in 18 states including Iowa and Illinois.

Mr. VanDuyne has been an active member of the community involved in numerous activities including: major contributing sponsor of Festival of Trees, Genesis Health System Gala Committee, Board Member of Skip-a-Long Daycare, Board Member and past board president of Rivermont Collegiate, and past board president of Family Museum of Arts and Science. He has encouraged employee contributions in local charities such as providing a 50% match from his own money for United Way and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Mr. VanDuyne is a member of numerous professional groups including the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) – Black Hawk Chapter, the Iowa Engineering Society (IES), American Council of Engineering Companies, Associated Employers Review Board, and a senior member of the Association of Energy Engineers. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University. He lives in Rapids City, Illinois with his wife, Donna, and their four children.

 

Senior Scientist of the Year:

Dr. Pamela Trotter  

Dr. Trotter is a key member of the Augustana College faculty, and she is leading the college's effort to create a research rich undergraduate environment. In her work experience, she has authored 15 peer reviewed articles and 18 abstracts. Dr. Trotter has received nearly $700,000 in funding from NIH. NIH currently sponsors her research on the coordination of metabolic pathways focusing on four proteins thought to transport intermediates of the citric acid cycle in and out of the mitochondrial compartment at Augustana College. While continuing to teach and pursue her ambitious research agenda, Dr. Trotter will serve as Grants Officer for Sciences at Augustana College beginning in 2005-2006.

In addition, Dr. Trotter was one of a team of three faculty recently successful in obtaining a $330,000 NSF instrument grant that has brought a high-field 400MHz nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer to the Augustana campus.

Dr. Trotter has been an active member of the community including Handel Oratorio Society, council member of St. James Lutheran Church (Rock Island), and singing in the annual performance of Handel’s Messiah on the Augustana campus.

Dr. Trotter is the President-Elect of the John Deere Chapter of Sigma Xi, the national scientific research society and holds BS from Pacific Lutheran University and PhD from Harvard University. She lives in Rock Island, Illinois with her husband, William.

 

Senior Scientist of the Year:

Dr. Gopal S. Revankar

Dr. Revankar is currently a Senior Staff Scientist at the John Deere Technology Center in Moline, Illinois. He has conducted several advanced materials research projects that have led to 11 awarded Patents and 7 pending Patents. Recently he has invented, developed and brought into production a low cost, ferrous based alloy coating, named Gopalite, to combat wear and corrosion in the off-highway and agricultural equipment industry. The significance of this invention is that the coating is ¼ the cost of other high alloy coatings.

He has been an active member of the community including serving as President of the Friends of India Association. He has held founding and executive positions in steel plants in India for nearly a dozen years before he came to the USA.

Dr. Revankar taught Materials Science and Industrial Technology at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls and University of Wisconsin, Madison and was also an adjunct Professor at St. Ambrose University. He has been an active member in numerous professional societies including ASM International, American Ceramic Society, American Vacuum Society, the United States Advanced Ceramics Association and Sigma Xi. He is the Past-President of Quad City Chapters of ASM International and Sigma Xi, and is currently serving on the Executive Board of the Quad City Chapter of ASMI. He holds PhD/MS in Materials Science and MS in Metallurgical Engineering degrees from University of Wisconsin, Madison, and BE (Metallurgy) and BE (Mechanical Engineering) from the College of Engineering, Pune, India.

He has two grown sons and two little grandsons. He and his wife, Pramila live in Moline, Illinois

 

President Michael Tarpey with ASAE Chair, Steve Newbery Society of the Year:

American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE), Quad City Section

The American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE) – Quad City Section was selected as the QCESC Society of the Year award. The award was accepted by the current ASAE Section Chair, Mr. Steve Newbery.

ASAE is the society for engineering in agricultural, food and biological systems with 260 members in the Quad City Section. ASAE contributes over $2,000 each year to scholarships for local high school students along with $200 to the QCESC Scholarship each year.

One of ASAE’s key annual activities is hosting the ASAE ¼ Scale Tractor Competition at the Quad City Downs scheduled this year for June 2-5, 2005. This ASAE sponsored design competition involves engineering students from approximately 30 major universities. In addition, the ASAE is a sponsor of the Agricultural Machinery Conference held annually in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with this year’s event scheduled for May 2-4, 2005.

 

 President's Award of Merit:

Patrick O. Barnes

Mr. Barnes was presented the President's Award of Merit  by Michael Tarpey, for his outstanding contributions to the QCESC and service to the Quad Cities Community.  He is a past president of the QCESC and current Award Chair and Webmaster. Pat is also twice past chairman and a current member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).  Mr. Barnes lives in Bettendorf, Iowa with his wife Carol and their four children.


The Quad City Engineering and Science Council is an umbrella organization representing 33 technical societies and organizations in the Quad City area with approximately 6,000 associated members. The QCESC is in it's 43rd year of operation and is a non-profit organization.
