AWARDS ANNOUNCED AT ENGINEERS WEEK BANQUET

Davenport, IA -- The Quad City Engineering and Science Council presented the following awards at the 41st Annual National Engineers Week Banquet held on Friday, February 21, 2003 at Davenport Holiday Inn.

Junior Engineer of the Year:

Kevin J. Landwehr
Hydraulic Engineer, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
Society of American Military Engineers (SAME)
Rock Island Post

Mr. Kevin J. Landwehr was presented the Junior Engineer of the Year Award for 2002 for his contributions to the science and engineering profession and to the local community.  Mr. Landwehr is employed by the Rock Island District Corp of Engineers as a Hydraulics Engineer and serves as the technical lead for the Rock Island District’s Hydrology and Hydraulics Branch for the Restructured Upper Mississippi River and Illinois Waterway System Navigation Study. In addition, he was selected to serve as the Engineering Division’s technical lead in support of the Department of Justice, and the District Counsel, in defense against a $442 million lawsuit brought before the Federal Court of Claims.

Mr. Landwehr has been an active member in the community including serving as a classroom teacher for Junior Achievement, a judge for Invent Iowa, a judge for several science fairs, and speaking at career fairs about careers in engineering.

Mr. Landwehr is a member of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) - Rock Island Post and was awarded the 2000 Paul Norton award for his “Outstanding Service to the Rock Island Post SAME”. In addition, he has authored or Co-Authored 4 publications and holds a B.S and M.S in Civil & Environmental Engineering from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. 

 

Senior Engineer of the Year:

James C. Miller
Senior Standards Engineer, John Deere
American Society of Agricultural Engineers • Quad City Section


Mr. James C. Miller was presented the Senior Engineer of the Year Award for 2002 for his contributions to the science and engineering profession and to the local community. Mr. Miller is employed at the John Deere Technology Center as a Senior Standards Engineer. He is a recognized world leader in the area of hydraulic standardization and has represented the U.S. and Deere to develop more than twenty ISO hydraulic fitting standards since 1989. In addition, he has been the Chairman of the SAE Hydraulic Fitting and Hose Committee since 1990 with over 50 committee members along with Chairman of the SAE FCCTC Task Force, and Chairman of the Fluid Connectors and Technical Committee. He has authored or Co-Authored 15+ articles and publications over the last 15 years.

Mr. Miler has shown his commitment to the Quad City engineering community by sponsoring the Deere & Company Engineering Explorers for the past ten years. He organizes 14 after-school sessions a year in the November through April time frame to provide an introduction to different engineering disciplines to area high school students. He has recruited volunteers from several Deere Quad City units to provide the students a look at the varied job possibilities within engineering as a career. Jim has an unselfish devotion to helping these young people as they explore career options in engineering. Jim’s support of the Explorer program provides a positive experience and unique career guidance opportunity for young people that in some cases have had life changing results.

Mr. Miller is a member of the Society of American Society of Agricultural Engineers • Quad City Section and holds a B.S. and M.S. in Agriculture Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and an MBA from St. Ambrose.


The Quad City Engineering and Science Council is an umbrella organization representing 31 technical societies and organizations in the Quad City area with approximately 6,000 associated members. The QCESC is in it's 41nd year of operation and is a non-profit organization.
