AWARDS ANNOUNCED AT ENGINEERS WEEK BANQUET
Bettendorf, IA -- The Quad City Engineering and Science Council presented the following awards at the 38th Annual National Engineers Week Banquet held on Friday, February 27, 2000 at Jumers Castle Lodge in Bettendorf.

Junior Engineer of the Year: Thomas D. Heinold was recognized for the Junior Engineer of the Year honor. Mr. Heinold was nominated for this award by the Society of American Military Engineers. He is a project engineer at the US Army Corps of Engineers in Rock Island and resides in Davenport, Ia. Mr. Heinold received his B.S. degree in engineering from West Point Military Academy in 1992 and his Masters in Engineering Management from University of Missouri in 1996. From 1996-1998, Mr. Heinold served in Korea as Engineer Company Commander with responsibility over 175 personnel and the maintenance program for $50 million in vehicles and equipment. In 1998, while serving at the R.I. District Office, Mr. Heinold developed plans and specifications for $3.1 million in improvements and managed the Districts Emergency Operations Center during the 1998 flood event. In 1999, Mr. Heinold was deployed to Albania to head the engineering effort for the largest ever U.S. refugee camp. He coordinated the efforts of contractors, engineer companies, and battalions from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, NATO, and local authorities to design and build: wastewater, freshwater, sanitary, drainage, shelter, electrical, and transportation systems for the 20,000 person refuge camp. Thomas is a member of the Saint Pauls Church Choir and is active in the Hearts and Hammers program. |

Senior Engineer of the Year: Gary L. Loss was recognized for the Senior Engineer of the Year honor. Mr. Loss was nominated for this award by the Society of American Military Engineers. He is the Deputy for Programs and Project Management at the Rock Island District Corps of Engineers and resides in Davenport, Ia. Mr. Loss received his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisc in 1971 and his Masters in Civil Engineering from Michigan Technological University in 1976 and is a registered Professional Engineer. As Deputy of Programs Mr. Loss provides program direction to the $140 million annual budget. In addition, Mr. Loss is the project manager for the $55 million 7 year Upper Mississippi-Illinois Waterway System Navigation feasibility study. In his 29 years of contribution to the profession Mr. Loss has made numerous presentations to the public on topic including: Corps response to the Flood of 1993, Major rehabilitation of Locks and Dams, Careers in Engineering, Upper Mississippi-Illinois River Waterway System Navigation Study. Mr. Loss is active in the community thru the Davenport Rotary and Church roles. |

Presidents Special Service Awards: Matthew Benson from the American Nuclear Society (ANS), Quad Cities Branch was presented the Presidents Special Service Award for acknowledgment of his contributions to the Council and the Technical Community in the Quad Cities. Matthew is a Past President of the QCESC and currently serving as Director I.

The Quad City Engineering and Science Council is an umbrella organization representing 34 technical societies and organizations in the Quad City area with approximately 6,000 associated members. The QCESC is in it's 38th year of operation and is a non-profit organization.
